After approval of the registration, the Nurse can apply for a practising certificate, which requires annual renewal. Midwives must apply to the Midwifery Council of New Zealand, which is the regulatory authority for midwives. Nursing and midwifery are regulated as separate professions, and someone who wishes to work in both capacities must gain registration and practicing certificates from both these councils.
Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis and in keeping with the requirements of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. The Council operates a system of reciprocal registration with Australia.
