Job Opportunities in Canada for Expatriates, Immigrants, and International Citizens
With its impressive healthcare system and a strong economy, Canada has mass appeal to expatriates from around the world. With the proper research, you will find a number of job opportunities in Canada to match your skills and requirements.
International citizens and expatriates can find a variety of health employment opportunities in Canada thanks to its thriving job market. Many of these jobs pay well but require very specialized skills.
Nurses are in high demand across Canada; for this reason, there are a number of Canadian immigration pathways for nurses to choose from. As a nurse, you may be qualified to come to Canada as a skilled worker though one of the many economic immigration programs at both the federal and provincial level.
Nurses migrating to Australia are required to complete a nursing skills assessment. This is completed with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) before lodging a visa application.
There are four main ways that you can come to Canada as a nurse:
Nurses qualify for Express Entry under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) or Canadian Experience Class (CEC) if they meet the program requirements. To apply under the FSW program, candidates must have at least one year of continuous work experience within the past 10 years in a skilled occupation. It is possible for the work experience to have been completed abroad.
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements can submit a profile to the Express Entry pool. Once they’re in the pool, they receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1,200. Then, the highest-ranking candidates in the Express Entry pool are issued Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.
One of the greatest advantages to the Express Entry system is that if you are invited to apply for permanent residence, your application can be processed as soon as six months!
The minimum language score requirement for nurses in Express Entry depends on the individual’s complete profile. You need to score at least a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7.0 in English or French in each of the four language competencies to be eligible for Express Entry. In addition, applicants must score at least 67/100 on the six-factor test that assesses candidates’ education level, language skills, and whether they have a job in Canada.
Nurses may also be eligible for the Regular Skilled Worker Program (QSW) depending on their score in the Quebec selection grid.
Eligible candidates may submit a profile to Quebec’s Arrima portal, which is ranked on another points system. The government of Quebec holds regular Arrima draws, where they invite candidates to apply for permanent selection. Nurses are often targeted in Quebec’s Arrima draws.
Another possible immigration option for nurses to immigrate to Canada is through a Provincial Nominee Program(PNP). PNPs are immigration programs run through a partnership between provincial governments and the federal government. Each province in Canada operates its own PNP with multiple streams, but every PNP leads to the same end result: Canadian permanent residence.
Some PNPs are only open to candidates who are already in the federal Express Entry pool. Receiving a nomination from one of these PNPs grants you an additional 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing you will receive an ITA.
Many PNPs require some kind of a connection to the province operating it, like family residing there or having past experience studying or working in the province. Other PNPs are designed to address skills gaps in the province by accepting skilled workers with experience in occupations that are in-demand in the province.
The Labour Market Priorities stream of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP), for example, is only open to candidates with an Express Entry profile who have experience in specific target occupations. The challenge with this stream is that you cannot apply without first receiving an invitation from the province. However, on multiple occasions, this stream has invited nurses to apply for nomination. Another stream that operates this way is Ontario’s Human Capital Priorities Stream, which also often invites nurses to apply for nomination.
Even if you aren’t currently eligible for any of the immigration options above, you may still be able to come to Canada. As an international student, you can build on your nursing degree to help advance your career, while living, studying, and even working in Canada.
Your Canadian education may even help increase your eligibility to immigrate permanently when you graduate. Keep in mind that Canadian immigration programs change all the time, so it’s impossible to guarantee that the eligibility criteria of any of the existing programs will be the same by the time you would graduate. That said, under the current system, a Canadian degree can make a world of difference.
There are many options to choose from to immigrate to Canada as a nurse. Finding out which ones you qualify for can be overwhelming. If you’re interested in learning more about your options to immigrate to Canada, completing our free online assessment can help you take the guesswork out of your immigration process.
To immigrate to Canada as a nurse, you must already have a nurse’s license in your country. Besides, to immigrate to Canada as a nurse, you need to demonstrate that you are qualified at the same level as someone qualified and working as a nurse in Canada.
To accurately assess your equivalence, it is important to first dive deeply into the specifics of how Canada rates internationally qualified nurses against their domestic criteria in a country with individual provinces.
The Nurse title can only be officially awarded to health professionals who are properly licensed or registered by the Nursing Regulatory Authority in a Canadian province. Each province has its own regulatory body and assessment process, and Canada does not have a national nurse registration authority.
There are three different types of nurses:
Nurses usually complete a four-year nursing program after graduating from high school to become registered general nurses.
RPNs are expected to have a bachelor’s degree in psychiatric nursing or a general nursing degree followed by a degree or period of study in psychiatric nursing. RPNs must practice in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
LPNs complete a college-level postsecondary nursing program that usually lasts two years.
As a general guide, you will likely require:
As an internationally qualified nurse who wants to immigrate to Canada, your first task will be to ensure that your educational credentials are verified. This is a mandatory step in the immigration process to Canada. Educational achievement must be assessed by World Education Services, an organization duly authorized and licensed by the Government of Canada to conduct education audits and verification.
At this time, we also recommend starting the first important step in gaining recognition for your nursing qualifications in Canada. This process is managed by the Canadian National Nursing Assessment Service, NNAS. The NNAS assessment costs CAD 650 and is the first required step to obtain both your Canadian visa and your nursing registration in Canada.
Once your NNAS assessment is underway, it’s time to start developing your Express Entry profile. Express Entry is where the work begins, it is the beginning of your immigration journey, not the end.
At this point, we will suggest that you take an internationally recognized test in English or French (or both, if you are lucky enough to speak those languages!), And we also encourage you to get serious about your job search, though given that you: Soon I’ll get a nurse registration. There are many options for successfully immigrating to Canada as a nurse without a job offer.
After your positive NNAS assessment, it is time to apply for the second stage of registration with Nursing Canada by contacting the Nursing Council directly in your chosen province or territory. Each territory will use the NNAS result as a basis for comparing the international medical skills, experience, and qualifications of applicants with the established respective Nursing Councils.
Usually, one of two outcomes occurs at this stage. Either the application will be reviewed and the applicant will be asked to take the provincial final nursing exam leading to full licensing and registration, or the applicant will be asked to complete an interim course of study.
When it comes to matching the skills, qualifications, and experience of internationally qualified nurses immigrating to Canada with the specific requirements of Canadian provinces and territories, we recommend consulting with one of the Canadian Nursing Immigration Experts.
At this point, your immigration project will start to merge. With your registration and nursing licensing, we should see growth in terms of your federal Express Entry Skilled Worker Visa, and we will consider moving forward through a provincial assignment or a fallback job offer if the invitation to apply still hasn’t materialized.
You do not need a formal job offer to immigrate to Canada as a nurse if your Canadian nursing registration is secured.
The penultimate step of your immigration to Canada is getting an invitation to apply for the Express Entry program. You will receive this Invitation based on your expedited entry case, which will either be compelling enough to be selected directly at the federal level, through a provincial nomination, or selected on the basis that you have received a formal offer to work in Canada.
Congratulations, you are about to immigrate as a nurse. Welcome to your new life in Canada. You have up to one year to formally activate your visa.
